Title

We chose not to show our main title until the very last shot. This was because we used it as an end to the opening, a way to move into the main story. It is also a common technique within the genre we focused on.

Settings/Locations

In the screenshot of our main character you can see the kind of area we set our film in, we decided to go for a small rural town, because when we researched romantic dramas a lot of them were set in smaller areas and as I said before, we wanted to stick to conventions as much as possible.

Characters

We introduced our characters all in the opening, so that we were able to understand a bit of our main character’s background before the story actually began. We meet our main character straight away, and then what is implied to be his ex-girlfriend right after that.

Special Effects

In this scene we had to use an effect which made it clear to the audience that it was a home video. In order to do this we put the contrast up higher and added the ‘REC’ in the corner, which was the best way to show that it was different to the rest of the opening, meant to be a flashback for our main character.

Title font/style

We used the font and colour that we did for our titles because we wanted to abide by the conventions as closely as we could. After researching romantic drama films we found that they used simple fonts and the colour was usually white. So we chose to do ours in the same way. It also meant that it was easier to see what genre our film was.

Story

We introduced the story by showing the main character alone, reading a letter, which we then find out was from his ex-girlfriend. This gives us a clue as to the state that our main character’s life is in. Then he meets someone who is clearly an old friend. We did this all in our opening because it meant that if the film were to continue we could have developed their relationship whilst telling the full story of his past relationship.

Genre

In the shot above you can see that it is quite a dull, depressing setting and the expression on our character’s face shows you straight away that the film is not a comedy. Then the introduction of his ex-girlfriend gives us a clue to the romance side of the film.

Costume

We chose simple, ordinary costumes for our characters/actors, because it wasn’t as important to the story. We wanted to make sure that the audience’s focus is not taken from the story. That’s why we put our characters in ordinary, everyday clothing.

Camera work

The final shot to discuss is again a shot of our home video. This part of the opening is what took the most attention as we wanted it to be completely clear what was happening. In order to do this, we used handheld camerawork so that it looked as though the characters themselves were filming it. The rest of the opening we used regular camera shots and angles.

Evaluation question 2

Social group: young adults.

In both of the films, the young adults seem to be care free and have their own individual personalities.

The main female characters are both quirky people, which is shown by their clothing in 500 days of summer, and in All we are it is shown through props (when she walks down the street and is carrying a pineapple)

The men in both are both calm and laid back, but are also romantic and polite.

All the main characters are average, middle class citizens with average day jobs. In all we are, the characters jobs are not revealed but they would have average jobs, such as working in an office.
